is a process of increasing interdependence,
interconnectedness and integration of economies and societies
Event in one part of the globe affects people in
other parts of world. It moves the world towards a unified value system and culture
Impact of globalization on the culture of Indian
youth is:

Globalization has made Indian economy knowledge based with flow of information every
second and youth carry information in
their pockets through smart phones and do value system is
increasingly becoming modern and tech oriented
•
Food: Burgerization
and Pizzaization of food. opening up of food joints like McDonalds,
KFC across the country, there has been a homogenization of food available
across the country,
•
Languages: Englishization of languages has
become an important part of the communication process, with its usage
increasing manifold, especially in urban areas. This has led to more
homogenization in language across urban areas.
•
French, German and Spanish are taught to
students right from school level, this shows the impact globalization has had
on language
•
Movies:
Coming of Netflix and amazon prime,
popularity of foreign movies has increased, Hollywood, Chinese and French
movies are quite popular among the urban youth
•
Festivals: celebrations of Valentines’ day, Friendship day are examples of change in
cultural values related to festival
•
Marriage: Importance
of marriage is decreasing, there has been an increase in divorces,
increase in live-in relationships, and the number of single parents is
increasing and even gay marriages
•
Individualism vs Community: the current age is
characterized by “I”, which celebrates self-centered egoism.
•
Breakdown of family jointness and other social
structures are leading to fragmentation of society
•
Globalization has increased migration of youth
both within the country and across countries, thus leading to development of
individualism and also the breakdown
of joint household
•
Globalization has led to an increase in uncertainty and consumerism among
youth; this underlying instability may serve to magnify the tensions and lack
of control they experience on a daily basis.
•
Uncertainty is because of the breakdown of
traditional norms, weakening of social relations like that of family and
marriage, uncertainty in career due to market economy. This has led to an
increase in cases of depression and suicide
among the youth.
•
Education becoming more progressive, and updated
with the world. It has led to an integrated knowledge system like HEFA and
foreign universities in India
The effect of globalization has been more
significant in the areas of style of dress (Jeansization), recreational activities, language preference,
music, relationships between members of opposite sex, notion of a successful
person, attitudes towards child adoption, preferences towards ultra-modern
activities, taste in movies, beliefs in rituals of society, growth of
individualism leading to changes in the institution
of marriage(Consumption marriage) and family (decline in jointness) and dance forms.
